How To Choose Glass For Your Window Installation

The glass is probably the most important part of a window. It takes up the most space which means it plays a huge part in the appearance of your house both from the inside and the outside. The large square space taken up by the glass also means that it is more exposed to damage. This can be from a wayward baseball or just a hailstone.

Choosing the right glass for your windows doesn't just mean getting the appearance right, it also means finding something that will last.

Consider the Strength of the Glass

Glass isn't a material that is known for its strength. Traditionally, glass has always been that brittle material that is known to shatter even when subjected to a small amount of force.

However, thanks to technological advancements, there are now types of glass that are a lot stronger than most people would expect.

Annealed glass is one example of glass that is much stronger than regular glass. Because of the slow cooling process, the glass is not stressed as much. Heat-strengthened glass and tempered glass are even stronger than annealed glass.

Choose a Glass that is Safe

Anyone who lives in an area that is prone to hurricanes and other windy storms should know something about safety glass. The only thing worse than the glass breaking is if the glass breaks and sends small shards of glass all over the room. This is extremely dangerous if there's someone in the room and unless the broken glass is properly removed, it can still be a danger long after the event.

However, impact resistant windows are made with laminated glass. This type of glass remains intact even when shattered. This reduces the likelihood of the shattering object from passing through and also makes it less likely for broken glass to be sent flying into the room.

Don't Forget About Privacy

Privacy is a very important factor when choosing glass. Privacy ensures that you're able to stay in your home without worrying about intrusive stares. This also makes it harder for a thief to scope out the place for valuables.

In bathrooms, the need for glass that provides privacy is quite obvious. There are different types of obscured glass that you can choose from. From frosted and etched glass to coated glass, the list of options is long enough to ensure you can get something that offers the level of privacy you desire.
